Homestead Exemption Application

***DEADLINE TO SUBMIT APPLICATION IS APRIL 1ST OF CURRENT YEAR***

Each Columbia County resident who owns and occupies the property as their permanent legal residence as of January 1st of the application year may be eligible for a regular homestead exemption from ad valorem taxes indicated below, provided the owner meets the qualifications

(O.C.G.A §48-5-40 and §48-5-45).*A married couple is allowed a homestead exemption on only 1 residence.


  • If your previous address is not Columbia County, you must provide a letter from the previous county reflecting no homestead/exemption
  • All applicants are required to provide a copy of their GA Driver’s License or GA state issued I.D. reflecting their home of record address
  • Non-US citizens must provide a copy of their Green Card or Visa
  • Trust documentation is required if your property is in a trust (i.e. Certificate of Trust)
  • Active duty military must provide a copy of a recent LES reflecting GA as home of residence.
  • Vehicles are required to be registered at the primary residence. This includes all vehicles owned by you and/or your spouse
  • **OTHER DOCUMENTS MAY BE REQUESTED**

    Homestead Exemption Applying for:

    S1 - Standard Homestead Exemption:

    This exemption is available to all homeowners who otherwise qualify by ownership and residency. This exemption is $2,000 off the assessed value.
  • S1 Document Requirements: Copy of Driver’s License or state issued I.D.


  • L6 - Elderly School Tax Exemption:

    This exemption is available to homeowners 70 years of age or older by January 1 of the application year. This exemption is $2,000 off the assessed value and 100% off school tax up to 3 acres.
